Holy spring Temple

Tirta Empul Temple or Tampak Siring Temple is a holy spring water temple located in Tampak Siring Village, Gianyar regency and it is about 39 km eastwards from Denpasar town. It is set in the dale and encircled by the hill. In the west side of this temple, there is an Indonesian President palace which has been found by the first president. The name of Tirta Empul is loaded in a inscription which is kept at Sakenan Temple, Manukaya village, Sub district of Tampak Siring, about 3 km from Tirta Empul Temple. In this inscription, the Tirta Empul is named by the Tirta Ri Air Hampul and then the name has changed into Tirta Hampul and finally become the Tirta Empul. Tirta Ri air hampul is meaning the water emerge or the holy pool (Petirthan) which is the water emerge from the land.

The wellspring emerges from the land is believed that it is the infinite creation. According to the history, that, that this water source is arranged and sanctified by king Indrajayasinghawarmadewa in the year 882 Saka (960 M). He has given the name with Tirta ri air hampul. The data is loaded in the inscription that is located at Sakenan Temple. Besides of the above epigraphy data, in Tirta Empul Temple is also found the archaeology omission like Colossus Yoni, Arca Lion, Tepasana and Tirta Empul Pool. According to papyrus of Usana Bali narrated that Tirta Empul is created by Bhatara Indra (Sun Deity) when bearing arms against the king where his palace is located in Bedahulu Countryside.

He is known as a very miraculous king, which he can lose or show suddenly, therefore he is named by Mayadenawa. Because of its miracle, he becomes the arrogance and expressing himself as a god. The Mayadenawa King owns the assistant (Patih) which is called Kalawong. They prohibit the people to do the Yadnya (praying to the god) so that is often happened the natural disaster, disease epidemic, agriculture fail and finally miserable life society.
Finally Betara Indra (one of Hindu God) gives battle against the kings that happened in Tampak Siring and then the Mayadenawa is gone to the wall and disappear. King Mayadenawa has also created poisonous pools which can the team of Bathara Indra die and faint after drinking this water.

Then Bathara Indra stick the weapon of Umbul-umbul and finally the water is emerging so that called by Tirta Empul and then it is passed to the dead and faint soldier that made them back to live. Therefore at the moment this pool water is sanctified by the Hindu society in Bali and they believe that this water source can heal various of diseases, hence every day this place is a lot of visited by Hindu people to do the ritual and sanctify them self . This place has been opened for public and as a famous tourist destination in Bali.

The greatest of all Balinese sanctuaries, Pura besakih, is the witness of the great natural power barely presented by Mount Agung looming above.
Its stunning look presents the harmonious combination of religi and nature.
The temple complex, about 22 temples in all, is built separately in such a distance of more than one kilometer.
Pura Pengubengan, the highest temple at the compounds, occupies an area where many ancestral temples, such as Pura Padharman, are sustained by a particular clan group.

Puta Penataran Agung, the great temple of state, occupies the central part of Besakih temple. Its six terraces represent a history of successive enlargements.
A sacred rite ‘Bharata Turun Kabeh (meaning ‘Gods descend together') annually celebrated during March or April united the 22 temples.
Thousands of people from any place in the island gather around the temple complex in devoted pray to the Gods. The festival lasts for one-month long.

Stairs ascend through a monumental split gate to the courtyard of the main temple, Pura Panataran Agung, where the central shrine dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu is wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings.

Two other important temples further up the slope join with the Pura Panataran Agung to symbolize the Hindu trinity: the Pura Panataran Agung in the center flies white banners for Shiva, Pura Kiduling Kreteg to the right flies red banners for Brahma; and Pura Batu Mddeg, on the left, has black banners for Vishnu.

There are many other temples to explore at Besakih, but many of their inner courtyards are reserved for worship and closed to visitors.

The name of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is taken from the lake where the temple is built at Beratan Lake. In papyrus chronicle of the Mengwi, this temple is referred as the name of Parhyangan ri pinggiring danu Beratan (sanctum located in lakeside of Beratan Lake ). Ulun is come from Hulu word meaning head or power and in this case is intended by Ulun Danu Beratan means power of Beratan Lake that is Danu Goddess.

Ulun Danu Temple is a Balinese Hindu Temple located at Candi Kuning countryside, Baturiti sub district and Tabanan regency. Its distance from Denpasar town is about 50 km north side on the way from Denpasar to Singaraja. It is set beside Lake Beratan with beautiful lake view and hills surround it. It is situated in the plateau area where the temperature is cooler and the hills are a lovely backdrop. On the north side of this temple is Pucak Sangkur mount, in the eastside there is Beratan Mount which also referred as Pucak Mangu or Pucak Pangelengan, in the south side there is Terate Bang Mount and in the Westside there is Tapak Mount and Watukaru Mount.

Gunung Kawi Temple

Gunung Kawi was built in the 11th century and was only rediscovered during the 1920’s. Throughout the ensuing years the site has undergone several renovations to conserve the overall architectural elements that are a tribute to the island’s artistic heritage. Gunung Kawi consists of two groupings of temples with the first made up of five shrines located close to the river. Here visitors can see an ancient inscription that dates back to when the monument was initially erected.
Meanwhile on the western riverbank, the second section is composed of four temples that have large nooks formed in the base where it is thought that worshippers once sat in early times to meditate. Along this row of temples there are also graves marking the burial sites of a Balinese king and several of his high ranking officers. As legend has it, the entire site was built as a dedication to the royal family of that era. Gunung Kawi was allegedly carved out of a mound of stone during a single night by the powerful military leader Kebo Iwa who used only his fingernails.

The temple is located in the vicinity of Tampaksiring in the regency of Gianyar that well known for its cool climate and fertile landscape. This area gives visitors a refreshing insight into the raw beauty of rural Bali. Gunung Kawi temple complex is an aesthetic site that has been painstakingly created to blend harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment. There is a restful ambience that makes it the perfect location for Hindu’s to pray, practice yoga and meditate. It is believed that followers are drawn to the temple as there are specific magical powers that can assist devotees to achieve levels of intense concentration and a balanced state of mind.

Cemuluk, on a protected bay, is an ideal place to begin snorkeling. Four kilometres further south along the coast is Banyuning, where there's a small wreck and some of the most beautiful coral gardens to be seen anywhere in the Lesser Sundas. The water is a little deeper here and sometimes there is a slight swell, so this area suits people with experience.

The Batur volcano is another active volcano which is also a tourist attraction. The volcano is located inside a 12 km wide and 450 m deep prehistoric caldera, beside a crescent-shaped lake. Altogether, the volcano, caldera and lake add up to an impressive sight. Legends say that the Batur volcano is actually the peak of the Mahameru mountain in India that was removed by the God Pasupati.

He carried two pieces of the peak and put it in Bali to use them as thrones. The bigger piece became the Agung volcano, which is a throne for his son, Putranjaya, and the smaller became the Batur volcano, which is the throne of Goddess Danu,

Nearby the volcano is the Batur temple, also called the Ulun Danu temple. It is said that the temple had existed since the 10 th century up to the beginning of the 11 th century. Before the eruption in of the volcano in 1917, the temple was located on the north-eastern slope of the Batur volcano. After the highly destructive incident, what remains of the temple were moved to the present location, which is in Kalanganyar, 900 meters above the Kintamani district. The village,that was also destroyed by the eruption, was also moved to a safer place near the temple. The highest shrine in the Batur temple is dedicated to the Goddess Danu, a manifestation of God who has power over the lakes and waters, and, naturally, over the fertilization and lives of the crops

If you plan to take the narrow Sayan-Kedewatan road at around 3 in the evening, along the eastern border of Ubud, you can enjoy beautiful views such as the Ayung river valley,

the Bali women doing their daily activities with effortless grace, and, if you arrive just in time, around 3 km outside Kintamani, you could see three majestic peaks of mountains: the Agung volcano, the Batur volcano and the Abang mountain, in the light of sunset.

Once in every five years, a ceremony called the Pemayuh Toya is held in order to bring back the sacredness of the water in Batur lake. The lake holds a very vital function for Bali as a whole. It is the main source of water in the traditional irrigation system, called Subak.
